Gender Equality

Gender Equality

In Declares Kenya We Believe Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Despite a lot of gains made in Kenya, many challenges remain: discriminatory laws and social norms remain pervasive, women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of political leadership, and 1 in 5 women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 report experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner within a 12-month period.

Girls and women from the informal settlements and Pastoralists in Kenya hold unlimited potential. The barriers that constrain these women are multifaceted. Issues like gender-based violence remain pervasive. Decades after independence, women are underrepresented in decision-making processes at all levels. Women and girls still spend long hours collecting water and firewood.

Household chores limit school attendance and work options. They have less access to and control over the benefits of land tenure, education, and employment opportunities. Their increased contributions are needed to help Kenya reach their development goals. Alongside our partners Declares Kenya works to promote women’s engagement in every aspect of development.

Our aim is to:

Create safe spaces for women and girls in informal settlements and pastoral communities in Kenya, so they can live free from gender-based violence.
Increase the participation of girls and women from marginalized informal settlements and pastoral communities in Kenya in decision and policy making at all levels.
Ensure women’s and girls from informal settlements and pastoral communities in Kenya and participation in peace building, conflict prevention, and mitigation.
Narrow gender gaps in education, training, and employment among informal settlements and pastoral communities in ft Kenya
